The article “an” is used before abbreviations

[ENAGO]英文執筆のワンポイントアドバイス

冠詞の”an”について

◎ The article “an” is used before abbreviations that start with a vowel sound. For example,

-> an EMR system
-> an MRI study

In the second example, the first letter of the abbreviation MRI (M) is a consonant. However, it makes an “em” sound when read out, which is a vowel sound. Therefore, the article “an” is used. Another example is “an HIV-based lentiviral vector.”
